SOCIAL :: Facebook's 'secret experiment' was most shared research in 2014
A paper published by the respected US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences back in July this year revealing Facebook’s “secret emotional experiment” on its users received more online attention than any other scientific research paper published during 2014, according to a new study by Academic analysts Altmetric. It single-handedly sparked outrage by revealing that Facebook had been experimenting on hundreds of thousands of unwitting users, attempting to induce an “emotional state” by selectively showing positive or negative stories in their news feeds, although perhaps more surprisingly the majority of the recorded attention was on Twitter than Facebook itself, where the article was shared 4,000 times to almost 10 million people.
