Mainstream 4G mobile services could be available in the UK as early as this year, under

The Mayor’s Office chose Digital London to announced that Virgin Media has been selected to deliver Wi-Fi to 80 tube stations on the London Underground for the Olympics, with a further 120 locations to be live by the end of the year.

BT has selected Cornwall to trial white space technology to better understand how it could be further used to provide internet connectivity to remote areas. BT will be running the trial in the same area as the LTE trials to glean comparisons of the two systems.

The EU Industry Committee has backed new rules which from June 2012 could enable retail clients to buy roaming services from suppliers other than their home service suppliers and help alternative suppliers to enter the market. They would also cap retail data roaming charges for the first time, and also set lower roaming price caps for calls and SMS texts.
